A New Sedimentation Model for Greater Cloud Diversity in Giant Exoplanets and Brown Dwarfs

چکیده
The observed atmospheric spectrum of exoplanets and brown dwarfs depends critically on the presence distribution condensates. Ackerman & Marley (2001) methodology for predicting vertical condensate particles is widely used to study cloudy atmospheres has recently been implemented in an open-source python package virga. model relies upon input parameter $f_{\text{sed}}$, sedimentation efficiency, which until now held constant. relative simplicity this renders it useful retrieval studies due its rapidly attainable solutions. However, comparisons with more complex microphysical models such as CARMA have highlighted inconsistencies between two approaches, namely that cloud parameters needed radiative transfer produced by virga are dissimilar those CARMA. To address these discrepancies, we extended original allow non-constant $f_{\text{sed}}$ values, particular vary altitude. We discuss one parameterization compare mass mixing ratio constant variable profiles find formulation better captures profile heterogeneous nucleation, yet performs comparatively homogeneous nucleation. In general, capacity handle any explicit anti-derivative, permitting a plethora alternative otherwise unattainable values. ensuing flexibility potential agree increasingly data.

Models of very-low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and exoplanets
Within the next few years, GAIA and several instruments aiming to image extrasolar planets will be ready. In parallel, low-mass planets are being sought around red dwarfs, which offer more favourable conditions, for both radial velocity detection and transit studies, than solar-type stars. In this paper, the authors of a model atmosphere code that has allowed the detection of water vapour in th...
متن کاملAdaptive Optics Observations of Exoplanets, Brown Dwarfs, and Binary Stars
The current direct observations of brown dwarfs and exoplanets have been obtained using instruments not specifically designed for overcoming the large contrast ratio between the host star and any wide-separation faint companions. However, we are about to witness the birth of several new dedicated observing platforms specifically geared towards high contrast imaging of these objects. The Gemini ...
متن کاملShades of Black: Searching for Brown Dwarfs & Giant Planets
We have searched, so far in vain, for brown dwarfs or giant planets in the vicinity of several nearby stars using cameras built at Université de Montréal attached to the CFHT Adaptive Optics system. Here, we show how pairs of images taken simultaneously through separate filters on, and off, the 1.6 μm methane absorption band, can be used to completely defeat speckles, the dominant noise source,...
متن کاملAtmosphere Models for Very Low Mass Stars, Brown Dwarfs and Exoplanets
Over the past decade considerable effort, both observational and theoretical, has been directed towards a more accurate determination of the stellar lower main sequence and of the sub-stellar domain covered by Brown Dwarfs and Planets. Astronomers have been looking for brown dwarfs for more than a decade, either with standard astronomical technics or with microlensing experiments. A breakthroug...
متن کاملA search for variability in brown dwarfs and L dwarfs
We have undertaken a differential photometric I band search for variability in three Pleiades brown dwarfs and three very low mass field L dwarfs. Analysis of the resultant time series for the Pleiades brown dwarfs (Teide 1, Calar 3, Roque 11) gives no evidence for variability (above 99% confidence) greater than 0.05 mags in any of these objects on timescales between 25 minutes and 27 hours. Ti...
